Xylomania! Skills and expertise in the world of wood The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports artisans, artists and designers applying traditional skills and expertise to tomorrow’s world and to this end created the Skills Academy biennial programme.
The new biennial programme is dedicated to the transmission of artisan know-how and practice at the interface with other sectors such as design and engineering. As an experimental lab for new thinking in the field, the Academy’s programme focuses on knowledge-sharing for innovation, creativity and sustainability.
Every two years, the Foundation invites twenty artisans, designers and engineers to take part in public lectures and masterclasses, and a workshop (for participants only) devised by a leading guest designer.
Morning sessions for the first semester of 2014 are open to the public, offering an in-depth exploration of the world of wood: its history, symbolism and tools, its transformation in art and artisanship, its evolving skills and know-how, its limitations, future and innovative potential, its role as a sustainable resource, plus light-hearted definitions for the xylophile’s lexicon of love…

Under the supervision of Patrick Jouin, Guest designer and Skills Academy programme director.
